The Spam F.A.Q.s
What Is Spam?
Spam
has
grown to include multiple meanings and can not be simplified
by a single definition. Some define Spam as being unsolicited
electronic mail sent out in bulk for a commercial purpose.
Not all Spam is necessarily commercial in nature, however. Religious
and political email are also considered Spam but are non-commercial
and are not all distributed in bulkness. Even receiving
a single email from an entity that you did not agree to
receive email from can be considered Spam.
Wouldn't Blocking Spam Violate the 1st Amendment?
No, because the 1st Amendment does not cover forcing ones
views on others without their consent. Most won't argue
any freedom to voice your opinion but Spammers are taking
advantage of this right. These disruptive and
most times illegal practices used by Spammers are even
more outrageous when they fraudulently hide behind the
First Amendment.
Isn't This The Same As Postal Junk Mail?
Shortly, no. Companies who send you junk mail every day, though
while mostly just as annoying as Spam, isn't as cost effective.
Note that those postal mailers need to be printed and distributed
and therefore carry costs. Email Spam costs are relatively
inexpensive. Spam email in bulk does not increase costs as
postal junk mail that would need more pieces printed and
distributed. Overall, Spam is a very inexpensive way to reach
millions within days. That's why it's so common place today.
I Got Spammed, What Do I do Now?
Report it. There are a few methods to which this can be achieved.
Firstly, you can check your state laws to see if there are
any legal actions you can pursue. If there are no legal options,
then you can report the offending Spammer to their ISP. This
is what Junk Mail does essentially.
Simply go to our Report Spam page and follow the easy instructions.
What Can
I do About Child Pornography Spam?
If you feel the Spam message you receive promotes or contains
child pornography then you should call 1-800-BE-ALERT. This
number is for U.S. Customs and should be contacted immediately
is any illegal activity is suspected.
